Keeping and teaching time

(#timekeeping)

Keeping the kids on a schedule is an on-going challenge in my family. So is issuing the nags to “go to the bathroom,” “clean your room,” and other stuff that really and truly has to be done on some regular basis.

Finally got a wrist watch with programmable alerts for the 5-yr-old (8-yr-old has had one for a few years). I chose this one because it allows you to set A LOT of reminders and alerts, and also has chore timers. I set custom alerts as potty reminders to help my hyperfocused kids remember that their bodies have needs too. I use my smartwatch the same way because I have a hard time drinking enough throughout the day.

Knowing ourselves and seeing others

(#peacekeeping)

We talk a lot about gender identity and expression. Maya Gonzalez’s book The Gender Wheel has expanded my vocabulary and understanding, and I find the wheel metaphor both beautiful and intuitive. I’d like to do more reading about different cultural histories and experiences of intersex genders, for example, and this is a great tool in that effort. Here’s a great read-aloud. Maya’s website, Gender Wheel, is full of helpful resources.
